'Oh my gosh!' | PGA Tour professional's topless celebration goes viral for all wrong reasons
A PGA Tour player found himself at the centre of an unexpected social media storm after an ill-advised topless celebration during a tournament round caused widespread reaction online.

Professional golfer James Hartley has found himself at the centre of unwanted social media attention following a moment of impulsive celebration during last week's PGA Tour event that quickly spiralled beyond his control.

The incident occurred at the par-5 16th hole during Saturday's third round, where Hartley had just holed a 15-foot eagle putt to move to six under par for the tournament. In a moment of unbridled emotion, the 28-year-old removed his golf shirt and held it aloft while walking toward the hole, an act captured by multiple camera angles and immediately transmitted to millions of viewers worldwide.

Social media platforms erupted within minutes, with clips of the incident accruing millions of views across various channels. The reaction was swift and divided, with some viewers finding amusement in Hartley's spontaneous celebration while others criticised what they perceived as inappropriate conduct on a professional sporting platform.

Hartley addressed the incident via his official social media channels later that evening, offering an unreserved apology while attempting to provide context for his actions. "I let the emotion of the moment completely overtake my judgment," Hartley posted. "The support I received from the crowd was incredible, and I reacted in a way that I genuinely regret. It was a moment I'll certainly learn from."

The PGA Tour issued a statement confirming that Hartley would face no formal disciplinary action, noting that while his conduct had "drawn legitimate attention," it fell short of any direct violation of tournament protocols. Tour officials did, however, emphasise expectations regarding player behaviour during broadcast coverage.

Fellow professionals were largely magnanimous in their response, with several taking to social media to share their own stories of emotional mishaps during competition. veteran tour player Marcus Webb offered particularly supportive commentary, stating that the intense pressure of tournament golf occasionally leads to unconventional reactions. "We've all had moments where we lose complete touch with the reality of the situation," Webb commented during a post-round interview.

Hartley ultimately finished the tournament in a tie for 12th place, collecting a cheque for approximately $185,000. The financial outcome provided some comfort, though the golfer acknowledged that the incident would likely define his public perception for some time. "Golf is a game built on composure and respect for tradition," Hartley reflected. "I failed to demonstrate either in that moment, and I'll carry that responsibility forward."
