Olympic cycling champion Rohan Dennis has broken his silence on social media, launching a passionate defense against what he describes as misleading media coverage following the tragic death of his wife, fellow Olympian Melissa Hoskins, in December 2023.

The former world time trial champion took to Instagram Monday night, expressing frustration with journalists who he claims deliberately constructed a damaging narrative about his character and relationship with Hoskins. Dennis argued that media outlets portrayed him as an abusive husband, a characterization he vehemently disputes.

Dennis received a 17-month suspended sentence in May 2025 after pleading guilty to committing an aggravated act likely to cause harm. Importantly, the court did not hold him criminally responsible for Hoskins' death, a distinction Dennis emphasizes in his recent statement.

The incident occurred near their suburban Adelaide home following a domestic argument about kitchen renovations. Court proceedings revealed that Dennis drove away during the dispute, with Hoskins jumping onto the vehicle's bonnet. The tragic sequence escalated when Hoskins attempted to open the car door while holding on as Dennis continued driving.

During sentencing, District Court Judge Ian Press specifically noted that Dennis was not charged with causing his wife's death. The judge acknowledged the accidental nature of the tragedy, stating that Dennis was unaware Hoskins had maintained her grip on the vehicle as he accelerated away.

The case garnered renewed attention in March when Dennis returned to social media, posting a photograph of a black Porsche with the caption describing it as an absolute weapon. South Australia's victims' rights commissioner Sarah Quick condemned the post as deeply offensive, interpreting it as insensitive given the circumstances surrounding Hoskins' death.

Dennis responded to that criticism by posting another image, this time featuring his two children with the caption calling them absolute weapons, apparently attempting to provide context for his earlier language choice.

In his latest Instagram statement, Dennis expressed deep love for his deceased wife and categorically denied any history of physical aggression toward her. He emphasized his consistent opposition to violence against women, particularly given Hoskins' role as the mother of his children.

The cycling champion described disturbing interactions with journalists following Hoskins' funeral, claiming reporters asked whether he was a murderer and how he felt knowing he had killed his children's mother. These questions, Dennis suggests, demonstrate the media's predetermined narrative about his culpability.

Dennis particularly criticized media coverage regarding his family, alleging that journalists have stalked and harassed not only adult family members but also involved his children in their pursuit of stories. He characterized this behavior as contradictory to claimed concern for the children's welfare.

The former professional cyclist accused media outlets of deliberately twisting his words and pursuing sensationalized coverage for commercial gain rather than accurate reporting. He emphasized that neither court proceedings nor evidence suggested he intentionally used his vehicle as a weapon.

Dennis' cycling achievements include two world championship titles in road time trial events, silver medal in team pursuit at the 2012 London Olympics, and bronze medal in road time trial at the Tokyo Olympics. His competitive career established him as one of Australia's premier time trial specialists.

Hoskins also achieved significant success in international competition, representing Australia at both the 2012 and 2016 Olympics in track cycling events. She was part of the team pursuit squad that captured the 2015 world championship title.

The legal resolution included a two-year good behavior bond requiring a $100 payment and a five-year driving license suspension. Dennis has complied with all court-ordered conditions while maintaining his innocence regarding intentional harm.
