Palmer Dismisses Hamilton Regret Claims Following Antonelli Chinese GP Triumph
Former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer believes Lewis Hamilton has no reason to regret his Ferrari move despite Kimi Antonelli maiden victory for Mercedes.

Former Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer has firmly rejected suggestions that Lewis Hamilton might harbor regrets about his blockbuster move to Ferrari, despite watching his young replacement Kimi Antonelli claim a maiden victory at the Chinese Grand Prix.

The seven-time world champion made the seismic switch from Mercedes to Ferrari at the start of 2025, leaving behind the Brackley outfit where he had spent 12 seasons and captured six of his seven championship titles. The move fulfilled Hamilton childhood dream of racing in Ferrari iconic red, representing what many consider the final chapter of his legendary career.

Hamilton inaugural season with the Maranello team proved challenging as he adapted to new machinery and different operational procedures. Apart from a victory in the Chinese sprint race, his best finishes came as fourth-place results at the Emilia Romagna, Austrian, British, and United States Grand Prix events.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Antonelli seamlessly stepped into Hamilton vacated Mercedes seat, finishing the 2025 drivers championship just six points behind his predecessor. The Italian prodigy remarkable adaptation to Formula 1 machinery impressed observers and validated Mercedes decision to promote him directly from junior categories.

Antonelli breakthrough victory in China sparked speculation about Hamilton emotional state, particularly as the Briton celebrated on the podium alongside his successor. Critics questioned whether witnessing Mercedes continued success might have triggered second thoughts about his career decision.

I do not feel like that is the case, Palmer told F1 TV when asked about potential mixed emotions. I mean, he knew what he was doing, switching to Ferrari after all those years at Mercedes. It is probably the last chapter of his career, and he is doing something legendary, driving for Ferrari and getting them back to the podium.

Palmer emphasized Hamilton strategic understanding of the move significance beyond immediate competitive results. The former Renault driver highlighted Ferrari competitive potential and Hamilton role in their resurgence after years of disappointment.

He knows as well that they are in the fight, Ferrari. It was another one of those tantalizing days like Melbourne, where they are in the lead. Can they do something? And then, just over time, the juggernaut Mercedes comes back through and passes them, Palmer observed.

The pundit expressed optimism about Ferrari future race-winning potential, suggesting that track position advantages could soon translate into complete race victories. Palmer noted how Ferrari had shown competitive pace but struggled to maintain advantages against Mercedes superior strategic execution and race management.

I feel like it is not going to be too long before they can take the fight all the way to the chequered flag in the race. There will be more tracks coming up as well, where track position, if they get it at the start, could win them the race, Palmer explained.

Hamilton Ferrari journey represents more than competitive considerations, embodying personal fulfillment and legacy building. The partnership between Formula 1 most successful modern driver and its most iconic team carries historical significance that transcends immediate championship contention.

Antonelli Chinese Grand Prix victory demonstrated Mercedes continued excellence in driver development and competitive preparation. The young Italian success validated the team bold decision to promote him despite his limited experience, while maintaining their championship-winning culture.

The generational transition at Mercedes has proceeded smoothly, with Antonelli displaying maturity beyond his years while handling the pressure of replacing a seven-time champion. His maiden victory provides confidence for both driver and team as they pursue championship ambitions.

Ferrarimeanwhile, continues building around Hamilton experience and technical feedback as they seek to end their championship drought. The team competitive pace in qualifying and early race stages suggests genuine progress, though consistency remains elusive.

Palmer assessment reflects broader understanding that Hamilton Ferrari move prioritizes personal satisfaction and historical legacy over pure competitive advantage, making regret unlikely regardless of short-term results.
