Liam Patterson-White produced an unbeaten 76 to rescue Nottinghamshire from a severe top-order collapse on the opening day of their County Championship match against Surrey at The Oval. Surrey captain Rory Burns chose to bowl on a well-grassed pitch, and the decision brought immediate results. Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater were dismissed inside three overs for five and four respectively, both edging to Ollie Pope at second slip. Matt Fisher then removed Joe Clarke to leave the Division One leaders 14-3.

Tom Lawes deepened the trouble after replacing the new-ball bowlers. Freddie McCann drove to Fisher at backward point, while Jack Haynes was caught by Pope for 20 after earlier being dropped on nine. Nottinghamshire had fallen to 41-5 before a heavy shower ended the morning session after 86 minutes of play.

Ben Martindale, making his first-class debut, was caught behind for 13 after play resumed. Patterson-White then joined Kyle Verreynne at 70-6 and added 28 with him before Verreynne departed for 22. Olly Stone's dismissal left Nottinghamshire 104-8, but Patterson-White and Brett Hutton constructed a 56-run stand around tea.

Hutton made 19 before Lawes removed him, and last batter Dillon Pennington contributed nine. Patterson-White faced 112 balls and struck 13 fours, while 80 runs came from Nottinghamshire's final two wickets. Lawes finished as Surrey's leading bowler with 5-45, supported by Dan Worrall's 2-41 and Fisher's 2-43.

Stone then gave Nottinghamshire an early breakthrough by having Dom Sibley caught behind for a second-ball duck. Surrey reached stumps at 13-1, leaving the match closely balanced after a rain-interrupted day. The fixture began with 25 points separating leaders Nottinghamshire and seventh-placed Surrey as both teams started the final six-match stretch of their Division One campaigns.
