Procter double strike leaves Northants-Durham promotion battle finely poised

Northamptonshire captain Luke Procter took two wickets in successive deliveries late on day three to keep the County Championship Division Two match against Durham in the balance. Durham closed on 246-7 in their second innings at Northampton, a lead of 188 runs, after losing three wickets in the final stages of play.

The ECB Reporters Network, in a match report carried by BBC Sport, said Durham captain Alex Lees anchored the innings with 80. Ben Stokes scored 37 and Mayank Agarwal made 48, with the pair adding 89 for the fifth wicket across almost 24 overs as Durham attempted to move into a stronger position.

Procter changed the direction of the closing session when he trapped Stokes leg before wicket for his 200th first-class dismissal. He then had Colin Ackermann caught at slip from the next ball. Agarwal also departed before stumps, given caught by George Bartlett at short leg off Calvin Harrison, although the report said replays appeared to show the ball had struck his pad rather than his bat.

Northamptonshire had begun the day on 225-7 after rain delayed the start. They reached 263 to secure a first-innings advantage of 58, with Lewis McManus unbeaten on 29. McManus and Ben Sanderson added 36 for the ninth wicket and earned a batting bonus point before Matthew Potts finished the innings with two wickets in consecutive balls.

Potts ended with 4-49 and Stokes took 3-58 for Durham. In the visitors second innings, Lees and Will Rhodes put on 64 in 24 overs before Rhodes was run out for 27 by Harrison at backward point. David Bedingham, who had scored 81 in the first innings, made five before Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed him leg before wicket. Chahal then bowled Lees shortly before tea.

Spin played a major part as the pitch offered significant turn. Chahal and Harrison took two wickets apiece, while Procter finished the day with 2-31. Durham had scored 205 in their first innings and Northamptonshire replied with 263. The match now moves into its final day with Durham holding three wickets and a 188-run advantage.

The bonus-point position also remained close after three days. Northamptonshire had collected four points from the match and Durham three, according to the scorecard details published with the report. Both teams entered the contest as promotion challengers, adding importance to the final-day result in Division Two.
