Renée Slegers says Arsenal board is backing her amid difficult start
Renée Slegers says she has felt the full support of Arsenal’s board as the women’s team struggles to turn its early-season ambitions into results. Speaking on Friday, the head coach described regular contact with senior club figures and said much of the pressure she feels comes from her own expectations, according to The Athletic’s reporting.

Arsenal are seventh in the Women’s Super League after going three league matches without a victory. Their European campaign has also brought difficulties: an added-time penalty was needed to beat HB Koge before Wednesday’s 2-2 draw at Paris FC. Slegers, who initially succeeded Jonas Eidevall on an interim basis, signed a contract running until 2029 in January, The Athletic reported.
In a transcript published by Arsenal, Slegers explained why assistant Aaron D’Antino handled the media after the Paris match. She said she quickly brought her emotions under control and chose to spend time with the players. She apologised for missing the press conference, acknowledged that speaking to reporters was part of her role and said she would attend next time.
Her frustration, she explained, was not directed at the players. Arsenal had established a two-goal advantage, but failed to keep Paris from recovering. Slegers said the discussion immediately afterwards centred on what the team could have done differently to finish the contest earlier. She also described individual conversations with players about how to move forward.
Slegers credited the captains with helping the squad respond, praising their composure and willingness to take responsibility. She said a subsequent meeting with the players had been positive and was encouraged by their work in training. While acknowledging that the team had not delivered its intended start, she maintained her belief in the group’s potential.
The Athletic also reported that Chloe Kelly will miss a second consecutive match while a hamstring issue is assessed. Slegers gave no timetable for her return. Steph Catley, meanwhile, took part in training on Friday. Arsenal’s next league assignment is Sunday’s visit to Manchester City, the defending champions and current leaders.
