Revolutionary Training Methods Drive British Athletics Gold Rush at World Indoors
Coaches Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows reveal the innovative blend of cycling, crystals, and cutting-edge science that propelled Keely Hodgkinson and Georgia Hunter Bell to championship glory.

The extraordinary British success at the World Indoor Championships has its foundation in revolutionary training methods that blend traditional athletics wisdom with innovative approaches ranging from cycling protocols to Himalayan salt crystals, according to the coaching duo behind the breakthrough performances.

Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows, the husband-and-wife team guiding Keely Hodgkinson and Georgia Hunter Bell to championship glory, have revealed the comprehensive approach that enabled three British gold medals in just 29 minutes of competition.

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe described the achievement as "a towering moment, not just for UK Athletics but for British sport," expressing hope that the success would inspire young athletes nationwide to join athletics clubs.

Painter's confidence in his athletes reached remarkable levels during the championships, with Hodgkinson feeling so strong before her 800m final that she contemplated breaking her own world record again. "Warming up she said: 'I feel amazing. I won't be surprised if I get a PB here,'" Painter recalled.

The absence of lactic acid buildup following Hodgkinson's world record performance demonstrated her exceptional fitness, validated when she ran 50.10 seconds in the 4x400m relay just an hour later - faster than any specialist 400m runner at the championships.

This peak condition represents the first time since Budapest 2023 that Hodgkinson arrived at a major championship completely healthy. "Even at the Paris Olympics she had a bit of a niggle and missed some of the winter," Painter explained. "But this year she's not missed a session."

The coaching team's holistic approach extends far beyond traditional track work. Nike's investment in supporting staff has proved crucial, providing physiotherapist Alison Rose to manage Hodgkinson's hamstring issues and physiologist Rachel McCormick, formerly of the Australian Institute of Sport.

Painter emphasizes the importance of athlete happiness in performance optimization. Hodgkinson's belief in Himalayan salt crystals for calming effects exemplifies their willingness to embrace unconventional methods. "It's about making the human happy," Painter noted. "If they're in a happy place they're going to perform well."

The dynamic between Hodgkinson and Hunter Bell provides mutual motivation despite contrasting personalities. "They're a dynamic duo," Meadows observed. "They elevate each other." Hodgkinson brings superior speed while Hunter Bell contributes greater speed endurance.

While Hunter Bell mirrors Meadows' analytical, systematic approach, Hodgkinson represents a "free spirit" requiring flexible programming. "We do keep reminding ourselves that Keely can't be a robot," Meadows emphasized.

A revolutionary training adaptation involves replacing traditional long slow running with cycling sessions that Hodgkinson enjoys so much that one-hour sessions frequently extend to 90 minutes. "We've had to rein her back," Meadows admitted. "If she wants to carry on in this sport for a decade or more, we have to let her enjoy life."

Painter's programming philosophy minimizes repetitive impact while maintaining aerobic development. "We do as much of the long slow stuff on bikes, in swimming pools, on cross trainers, or ellipticals," he explained. "Then when we run on the track we feel sharper and the sessions are better."

McCormick's scientific expertise has validated the athletes' remarkable recovery abilities, with blood lactate levels reaching the twenties during intense sessions before returning to similar levels just two days later. This capacity, built through systematic training progression, continues surprising even experienced sports scientists.

"A lot of the science has been done on 5k, 10k and marathon runners," Painter noted. "She's testing us and we're up in the 20s. Then two days later we're up in 20s again and she's blown away by how we've worked like that and then come back and do it again."

The coaching team's individualized approach enables multiple athletes to train together while receiving bespoke programming. "There can be seven different training sessions going on within the same session because everyone's so bespoke," Meadows marveled.

With their innovative methods producing world-record performances and championship success, Painter and Meadows believe greater achievements lie ahead, suggesting British athletics' golden era is just beginning.
