Richarlison's Vasco da Gama move falls through after Everton deal collapses

Richarlison's proposed transfer from Tottenham to Vasco da Gama has fallen through, BBC Sport reported on Friday, leaving the Brazilian forward's future unresolved after a second unsuccessful attempt to move clubs. The 29-year-old had already seen a deadline-day return to Everton collapse and was subsequently omitted from Tottenham's Premier League squad.

According to the BBC, sources suggested Tottenham had agreed a transfer fee with Vasco, but personal terms were understood to have become an obstacle. With Brazil's transfer window due to close on Friday night, the report indicated a growing expectation that Richarlison would remain at Spurs. That was not presented as a confirmed decision about his future.

The earlier Everton move had been proposed at £35m, with that deal also breaking down over personal terms. His exclusion from Tottenham's league squad followed the failed transfer. The Vasco development therefore leaves unresolved both his attempt to secure a departure and his position at the club, where he had been an important contributor during the previous campaign.

BBC Sport had reported on Thursday that Richarlison and Tottenham were in a dispute over the nine months remaining on his contract. He was understood to be considering his options, with sources indicating that he wanted to be released from the rest of the agreement. The deal runs until next summer, although Spurs also hold an option to extend it by 12 months.

Manager Roberto de Zerbi offered no new update on a possible move at his Friday news conference. He said he had repeatedly spoken with Richarlison and tried to persuade him to stay. De Zerbi also expressed regret about how the situation had developed, saying he would have preferred to have the forward in the squad and content to remain at Tottenham.

Richarlison finished last season as Tottenham's leading Premier League scorer with 11 goals, helping the club avoid relegation. De Zerbi acknowledged that contribution while also referring to events over the preceding 45 days. The manager's comments recognised the player's importance, but did not announce a resolution to the contractual disagreement or confirm what would happen next.
