Russo Finds Perfect Balance as Arsenal Chase Champions League Glory Against Chelsea
Alessia Russo discusses her career-best form with Arsenal, family motivation, and foundation work while preparing for crucial Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal forward Alessia Russo radiates contentment as she reflects on a season that has seen her reach new heights both personally and professionally, with 15 goals and six assists in 29 games positioning her as the Champions League leading scorer heading into Tuesday crucial quarter-final clash with Chelsea.

The 27-year-old England international attributes her exceptional form to achieving balance between happiness in her personal life and optimal performance environment at Arsenal, creating conditions that allow her natural abilities to flourish consistently.

Whenever youre happy in life and in your club environment, it breathes on to the pitch, Russo explained during an exclusive interview. I do feel in a really good place. I feel super calm and Im just enjoying my football.

Russo evolution includes mastering the art of staying present rather than getting caught up in external pressures or future scenarios that can distract from immediate performance requirements.

Im staying quite present this year, which is something Ive tried to do a lot over the last couple of years, making sure I just enjoy the here and now and focus on each moment. That helps me stay locked in on one thing at a time.

The development of this mindset represents years of conscious effort, as Russo acknowledges that learning to compartmentalize effectively required maturity and experience that only came with time.

Ive probably only got used to it over the last couple of years at 26 and 27, Russo admitted. Before that things were just 100 miles an hour and you can get carried away and think too far ahead. Ive found that does not help me at all.

Arsenal face what Russo describes as an ideal week of football, with three London derbies at Emirates Stadium beginning with their 5-0 victory over West Ham, followed by the European encounter with Chelsea and a subsequent league fixture against Tottenham.

The Champions League quarter-final represents Arsenal opportunity to defend their status as reigning European champions, though Russo acknowledges the pressure differs from their maiden triumph last season.

Maybe the pressure is not as intense, but for us and the standards that we set ourselves there is a different kind of pressure. The difference is that we know we have got what it takes, but we also know how amazing it feels to win and we want that feeling over and over again.

Russo tactical development includes embracing deeper roles that showcase her complete skill set beyond pure goalscoring, with increased recognition of her work rate and defensive contributions enhancing her overall value to the team.

Its really nice that its maybe being recognised from the outside, but as long as its recognised by my teammates and the staff, then Im happy. Theyre the opinions that matter the most to me.

Her approach to missed chances reflects lessons learned from former Manchester United teammates Tobin Heath and Christen Press, who taught her to maintain positive perspective during difficult moments.

Whenever we would miss a big chance, they were always so positive, Russo recalled. They were like: Thats amazing. Were doing something right because were getting these chances. So lets keep going and build momentum.

Family remains central to Russo motivation, with parents Mario and Carol attending most games alongside brothers Georgio and Luca, who also serves as her agent. Her father has maintained perfect attendance throughout her Arsenal career.

How they have raised me is something that I carry with me all the time and is probably something I dont talk about that much. Theyre a massive part of what motivates me.

The addition of her niece, born the day before last year Champions League final, has provided another source of inspiration while helping maintain perspective during challenging periods.

Shes just the light of our family now. Whether Ive had a good or bad game, I go into the family room and shes there. She doesnt care, shes away with the fairies playing with her toys.

Russo commitment extends beyond football through The Alessia Russo Foundation, which champions girls participation in sports, empowers young women, and elevates women health initiatives.

I feel grateful that I play for Arsenal, one of the best clubs in the world, and for England, one of the best national teams in the world. Ive got this platform, people know me, and while Im fortunate enough to have that I want to do something as meaningful as possible.

Looking ahead to the Chelsea encounter, Russo emphasizes the importance of making crucial moments count against elite opposition where opportunities remain limited throughout matches.

Youre prepared and aware you only get a few moments in most games now, you probably only get around three big chances as a front three or front four. Were aware of that in the team and lots of our messaging is about making moments matter.

The quarter-final represents another step in Arsenal quest to retain their European crown while pursuing domestic silverware across multiple competitions during what could prove to be a historic campaign for the North London club.
