Saka winner gives Arteta victory in 250th Arsenal league game

Bukayo Saka scored the only goal as Arsenal beat Aston Villa 1-0 at Villa Park on Monday, giving Mikel Arteta a victory in his 250th Premier League match as the club's manager. Sky Sports reported that Saka struck in the 59th minute, securing Arsenal's second win from two games at the start of their title defence.

Villa created the clearest opening of the first half when Emiliano Buendia hit David Raya's crossbar from outside the penalty area in the 12th minute. Arsenal controlled possession for extended periods but had difficulty producing clear chances, with a mistimed Gabriel header their nearest effort before the interval, according to Sky Sports' match report.

The visitors increased their pressure after Eberechi Eze replaced the booked Christos Tzolis at half-time. Saka initially appeared to win a penalty when Ian Maatsen brought him down, but a VAR review determined that the contact occurred outside the area. Three minutes later, Saka converted Riccardo Calafiori's low cross from close range to break the deadlock.

Aston Villa started goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and striker Nicolas Jackson for their club debuts. Unai Emery's side pushed for an equaliser after falling behind, but Arsenal protected the lead through stoppage time. Sky Sports recorded that Villa finished without a shot on target, leaving them without a point or an effort on target through their first two league matches.

The result supplied a winning marker for Arteta's managerial milestone. Opta Analyst reported before the match that Arteta became only the 10th manager to take charge of 250 Premier League games at one club. He joined a list that includes Arsene Wenger, Alex Ferguson, Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, David Moyes and five other managers. Arteta was appointed by Arsenal in December 2019.

Opta's figures showed Arteta entering the game with 150 wins, 48 draws and 51 defeats from his first 249 Premier League matches. Arsenal's victory at Villa Park added win number 151. After the match, Arteta described the result as a major win at a difficult venue and credited contributions from both the starting side and the substitutes. Arsenal remain perfect after two league games, while Villa are still seeking their first point.
