Ekepati hat-trick leads Samoa to record 76-0 World Cup win over Wales
Samoa recorded their highest score with a 76-0 victory over Wales at the Women's Rugby League World Cup in Sydney, scoring 14 tries against the tournament debutants. According to BBC Sport's match report, Tyra Ekepati marked her debut with a hat-trick as Samoa surpassed the scoring record established in their 52-8 win over Russia at the 2008 World Cup.

The result followed Samoa's 40-0 defeat by Australia in their opening fixture and left Wales with two heavy losses after their first match against England. Wales were playing only their 14th international and facing opposition from outside Europe for just the second time. Samoa, ranked fifth in the world, finished with more than 2,000 metres gained and 21 line breaks. Wales did not register a line break.
There had been an early opportunity for Wales to put Samoa under pressure. Errors left the Samoan side defending their own try line, but Wales could not turn that position into points. Frank Pritchard's team then moved ahead through Laikha Clarke, whose opening score was Samoa's first World Cup try in almost 18 years, according to the BBC. From there, Samoa repeatedly broke through the Welsh defence.
Ekepati scored twice before the interval, while Amber Hall was also among the first-half scorers. Samoa reached half-time with a 40-0 lead, leaving Wales facing the same first-half points deficit they had suffered in their opening World Cup appearance. The break did not halt Samoa's scoring: captain Evana Isa'ako crossed for the team's eighth try as the second-half pressure continued.
Mercedez Taulelei-Siala finished with two tries, and 18-year-old Freedom Crichton Ropati scored her first at a World Cup. Ekepati, the 19-year-old centre, completed her hat-trick late in the game before Tavarna Papalii supplied the final try with 90 seconds remaining. Ten successful goals from Piliae-Rasabale added to Samoa's 14 tries to complete the 76-point total.
Both teams still have a pool fixture to play. Samoa next face England in Wollongong on Friday, 30 October. Wales return to action against defending champions and co-hosts Australia in Sydney on Sunday, 1 November, after conceding 40 first-half points in each of their opening two matches.
