Sara Bejlek Stuns Aryna Sabalenka to Reach Cincinnati Quarter-Finals
Sara Bejlek produced the biggest ranking win of her career by defeating top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round of the Cincinnati Open. The 20-year-old Czech won 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 to advance to her first WTA 1000 quarter-final, according to BBC Sport.

Sabalenka held strong positions in both sets but could not close either one. The world number one led 5-1 in the opening-set tiebreak before Bejlek recovered to take it 9-7. Sabalenka then moved 4-1 ahead in the second set, only for Bejlek to rally again and finish the match in straight sets.
The result marked Bejlek’s first victory over a player ranked inside the top 10. She entered the tournament ranked 35th in the world and had already won a hard-court title in Abu Dhabi in February after coming through qualifying. Her Cincinnati run will continue against former Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the last eight.
Bejlek credited persistence for the comeback. In comments reported by the BBC, she said she kept believing and fighting while trying to deliver her best tennis. That approach was tested twice as Sabalenka built sizable leads, but Bejlek reversed the momentum on each occasion.
For Sabalenka, the defeat adds another early exit to a difficult build-up to the US Open, which begins on Sunday, August 30. She is attempting to become the first woman since Serena Williams in 2014 to win three consecutive US Open singles titles. Her position at the top of the rankings is also at risk: Elena Rybakina can replace her as world number one by reaching the Cincinnati final.
Sabalenka has reached only one semi-final since winning the Indian Wells and Miami titles in March, a two-event achievement known as the Sunshine Double. That semi-final ended in defeat by Jessica Pegula in Berlin. Sabalenka has also suffered early losses in Toronto and Cincinnati ahead of her title defence in New York.
