Watch Highlights
Scottie Scheffler finished 17 under par to win the opening FedEx Cup playoff event at TPC Southwind by eight shots. The world number one closed with a 66 for his first victory since January.

Scottie Scheffler returned to the winner's circle with an emphatic eight-shot victory at the St Jude Championship, the first of three FedEx Cup playoff events. The world number one finished 17 under par at TPC Southwind after a four-under final-round 66, extending a two-shot overnight advantage into a dominant winning margin. BBC Sport reported that the American never looked in serious danger during the closing round.

Scheffler's start was not completely clean. An early bunker escape struck a sprinkler head and finished in water, leading to a bogey, but the mistake did not alter the direction of the tournament. He went on to outscore playing partner Sam Burns by seven shots on Sunday. Burns signed for a 73 and shared third place with Sweden's Alex Noren on eight under, while the runner-up finished on nine under.

The victory ended a wait stretching back to the American Express Open on 27 January. Scheffler had recorded several near misses in the intervening months, but at Southwind the consistency that has underpinned his season finally produced another title. His final total also separated him clearly from US Open champion Wyndham Clark and Im Sung-jae, who both ended the week on seven under.

The result gives Scheffler a commanding start to the playoff sequence before the field is reduced again. The top 50 players in the FedEx Cup standings now advance to the BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St Louis. Only the leading 30 after that event will qualify for the Tour Championship at East Lake, where the season-ending prize fund is $40 million.

The contrast with Rory McIlroy was severe. McIlroy finished 66th at eight over, 25 strokes behind Scheffler, and failed to post an under-par round all week. The Northern Irishman had not competed since July's Open Championship and said his swing felt increasingly uncertain as the tournament progressed. He did make four birdies in a seven-hole stretch on the back nine, but successive closing bogeys underlined a difficult return.

For Scheffler, the key takeaway is form as well as margin. A controlled final round converted a narrow lead into the week's clearest performance just as the FedEx Cup field begins to tighten. For McIlroy and the rest of the qualifiers, the BMW Championship provides only one more opportunity to secure a place among the final 30.
