Shaun Edwards says Borthwick declined his offer to join England staff
Shaun Edwards says England head coach Steve Borthwick turned down his offer to work with the men's national team at next year's Rugby World Cup, explaining that he was satisfied with his existing coaches. BBC Sport reported Edwards' account of the conversation on Monday, following an interview with Rugby Union Weekly. Edwards has since committed to working with Argentina through the end of the tournament.

The 60-year-old said he had spoken to Borthwick by telephone and made clear his willingness to contribute, even offering to serve as an assistant kit man. According to Edwards, Borthwick responded directly that he was happy with his staff and the team's progress. Edwards said he thanked the England coach for his honesty and respected the decision. His account described a rejected offer, rather than an agreement to join England.
England already have their coaching arrangements in place for the 2027 World Cup in Australia, the BBC reported. Richard Wigglesworth oversees defence, with support from Byron McGuigan and Joe El-Abd. The team's recent results have varied sharply: Scotland ended a 12-Test winning run in February, followed by five consecutive defeats. England's most recent wins came against Fiji and Argentina.
Edwards left France earlier this year before taking a short-term role with England's women. His coaching record includes three Six Nations Grand Slams during 12 years with Wales and three Six Nations titles with France. At club level, he helped Wasps win two Champions Cups and four English titles, working first on defence before becoming head coach.
The latest approach follows earlier interest in bringing Edwards into England's coaching structure. BBC Sport reported that the Rugby Football Union made approaches in 2006 and 2008, while chief executive Bill Sweeney held informal discussions with him in 2021. On that occasion, the union decided against competing with France for his services. Despite those contacts, Edwards' international coaching career has continued elsewhere.
Edwards also reflected on his recent work with the Red Roses, including their 26-19 victory over New Zealand at Allianz Stadium. Zoe Harrison scored the winning try on the final play. He said England made 310 tackles while conceding 19 points, a defensive effort he regarded as exceptional in his coaching career. That spell preceded his new commitment to Argentina for the World Cup campaign.
