SoftBank Pulls Away From Seibu 8-2 Behind Yanagimachi's Three-RBI Night

The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks turned a close game into an 8-2 victory over the Saitama Seibu Lions on Friday night at Mizuho PayPay Dome, strengthening their position at the top of Nippon Professional Baseball's Pacific League. According to the official NPB box score, SoftBank scored once in the first inning and twice in the second before breaking the game open with five runs in the seventh. The teams finished with nine hits for SoftBank and eight for Seibu, and neither side committed an error.

Tomoya Yanagimachi supplied the decisive blow in the seventh, hitting his first home run of the season with two runners aboard. He finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, leading an efficient Hawks lineup. Masaki also homered, opening the scoring with his 23rd of the season in the first inning, while Yuki Yamamoto and Shoji each drove in two runs.

How the pitching held

SoftBank starter Yugo Maeda worked 3 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits, two walks and two earned runs. The bullpen then shut down Seibu. Go Suzuki earned the win by retiring five batters without allowing a hit or a walk, improving to 2-1. Darwinzon Hernandez and Tsumori followed with perfect innings, while Itoh yielded the Lions' only hit after the fourth inning. Roberto Osuna completed the ninth.

That relief sequence was as important as the late offensive surge. Seibu had eight hits, including three from Takeya Nakamura, but the Lions could not build another scoring threat once Suzuki entered. The official line shows SoftBank's relievers combining for 5 2/3 scoreless innings and allowing only one hit.

Why it matters

NPB's updated standings list SoftBank at 74-44-3, a .627 winning percentage, six games ahead of second-place Seibu. The Lions fell to 69-51-3. With the calendar in September, every head-to-head result carries extra weight: SoftBank gained a full game on its closest pursuer while also improving its season record against Seibu to 11-10.

The manner of the win also matters. SoftBank did not rely on a single phase. The Hawks struck early against losing pitcher K. Takahashi, received extended scoreless work from the bullpen, and produced the late inning that removed any realistic path back for Seibu.

What to watch

The clubs continue their weekend series in Fukuoka on Saturday and Sunday. Seibu's immediate challenge is converting more traffic into runs after leaving an eight-hit night with only two on the scoreboard. SoftBank, meanwhile, will look to carry forward the combination of power and bullpen depth that decided Friday's opener.
