Abell and Lammonby double centuries lift Somerset to record total against Surrey

Tom Abell and Tom Lammonby both scored maiden first-class double centuries as Somerset reached 691-8 against Surrey on the third day of their County Championship Division One match at Taunton. According to the ECB Reporters' Network report carried by BBC Sport, their innings helped Somerset build a 269-run lead and register their highest total against Surrey.

Abell finished unbeaten on 284 from 385 balls, with 29 fours and seven sixes, while Lammonby made 229 from 359 deliveries, including 28 fours and four sixes. Their fourth-wicket partnership produced 334 runs, surpassing Somerset's previous record of 313, set by Abell and James Rew against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge last season. Both batters recorded career-best scores.

Somerset had resumed on 222-3, with Lammonby on 103 and Abell on 63. Surrey were without spinner Rahul Chahar because of a back problem and Dan Lawrence following an England call-up. Missed catches compounded those absences: Rory Burns dropped Lammonby on 106 at slip off Ralphie Albert, and Adam Thomas put down Abell on 87 at short cover off Mahipal Lomror.

Lammonby passed his previous first-class best of 133 before lunch, while Abell completed his fourth Championship century of the summer. Somerset reached the interval on 353-3. Lammonby brought up his double hundred during the afternoon, but Dan Worrall eventually dismissed him lbw with Somerset on 431-4, ending the partnership that had transformed the home side's innings.

Surrey then picked up wickets without stopping Abell. Rew fell for one, Archie Vaughan contributed 26 and Craig Overton was also dismissed by Lomror, who returned figures of 4-196. After Lewis Gregory departed cheaply, Migael Pretorius joined Abell for an unbeaten ninth-wicket stand of 150 from just 105 balls. Pretorius ended on 72 not out, while Abell struck Albert for four consecutive sixes during the late acceleration.

The day's results elsewhere also settled Somerset's place in the standings: they were confirmed as runners-up for the seventh time this century, regardless of this match's outcome. Somerset have yet to win the Championship title. At Taunton, the game remained unfinished, with Surrey's first-innings 422 now well behind and Somerset still holding two wickets at the close.
