South Dakota Rewards Eighmey with Five-Year Extension Following Breakthrough Season
Coyotes women's basketball coach Carrie Eighmey earns extension through 2031 after guiding program to 26-10 record and WNIT semifinals appearance.

The University of South Dakota has secured the future of its resurging women's basketball program by awarding head coach Carrie Eighmey a five-year contract extension running through the 2030-31 season, the university announced Thursday.

The decision comes on the heels of a remarkable turnaround that saw Eighmey transform the Coyotes from a struggling program into genuine contenders within just two seasons. Her latest campaign produced a stunning 26-10 record, including a memorable run to the WNIT semifinals that captured the attention of the college basketball world.

Eighmey's impact on the program cannot be overstated. The 15-win improvement from her first to second season ranks as the second-best single-season turnaround at the Division I level, a testament to both her coaching acumen and the culture she has established in Vermillion. The 26 victories represent the program's highest win total since the 2021-22 campaign, marking a clear return to relevance for Coyotes basketball.

"Carrie has done an exceptional job since arriving to USD and Vermillion," said Athletic Director Jon Schemmel. "Her passion for Coyote women's basketball is apparent every day and I'm excited for her to continue leading our program for years to come!"

The Nebraska native's journey to South Dakota reflects a coaching career built on steady progression and consistent success. After a single season at Idaho, Eighmey brought extensive experience from her time in Division II and NAIA ranks, where she compiled an impressive 285-151 record over 14 seasons. Her 52-46 mark at the Division I level demonstrates her ability to translate success across different competitive levels.

Under Eighmey's guidance, the Coyotes have not only improved their win-loss record but also elevated their standing within the competitive Summit League. This season's 12-4 conference record earned USD a third-place finish, their best conference showing since 2021-22 and a significant step forward in a league known for its balanced competition.

The coach's emotional response to the extension highlighted the personal investment she has made in rebuilding the program. "I am incredibly excited to continue leading the South Dakota women's basketball program for years to come," Eighmey stated. "I am beyond grateful for President Sheila Gestring and Jon Schemmel's unwavering belief in me, our staff, and this program."

Her gratitude extended beyond the administrative level to encompass the broader Coyotes community. "The support we have received from our administration, the campus community, and Yote fans everywhere has been truly overwhelming in the best way possible!" she continued, acknowledging the collaborative effort required to achieve such dramatic improvement.

The extension represents more than just reward for past performance; it signals USD's commitment to maintaining the upward trajectory Eighmey has established. In her two seasons at the helm, the Coyotes have posted a combined 37-30 record with a 17-15 conference mark, establishing a foundation of competitiveness that extends beyond any single breakthrough season.

Eighmey's background as a native of Edgar, Nebraska, adds another layer to her connection with the region. Her understanding of Midwest basketball culture and recruiting landscapes has proven invaluable in attracting talent to Vermillion while building relationships within the local community.

The timing of this extension, coming immediately after the program's most successful season in years, demonstrates USD's proactive approach to securing stability. Rather than waiting for other opportunities to potentially lure Eighmey away, the university moved decisively to ensure continuity in a program clearly trending upward.

With five more years secured, Eighmey can now focus entirely on the next phase of the program's development, building upon the foundation established through two seasons of steady progress and breakthrough success.
