Spanish football mourns Jesús de Miguel as league tributes confirmed
Tenerife’s squad and staff joined family members and Spanish football officials in Navahermosa on Thursday for the funeral of Jesús de Miguel, Sky Sports reported. The striker’s death was announced on Tuesday after he was taken to intensive care following Monday’s on-field collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono.

A procession preceded the service at the San Miguel Arcángel church. Those attending included Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, Spanish federation president Rafael Louzán, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez and Atlético Madrid chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, alongside Tenerife majority shareholder Rayco García.
Before the funeral, De Miguel’s agent Manuel Hernández delivered a family statement thanking people for their support and describing the lasting memories of those who knew him. Sky Sports also reported that police had opened an investigation into the death. The report did not announce any conclusion from that investigation.
LaLiga separately confirmed that it, the Spanish federation and Liga F had agreed tributes across the November 6-9 round of fixtures. In the top two men’s divisions, starting players from opposing teams will walk out together in commemorative number-nine shirts. They and the referees will gather for a floral tribute before a minute’s silence, with stadium screens displaying De Miguel’s image.
The remembrance will continue during matches. At the first stoppage from the ninth minute, reflecting his shirt number, referees will pause proceedings for a tribute video and applause before play resumes. The minute’s silence and in-game pause will also apply to national competitions organised by the federation and Liga F, extending the observances beyond the two men’s professional divisions.
Four fixtures have been postponed: Castellón against Eibar, Granada against Tenerife, Andorra against Mallorca, and Costa Adeje Tenerife against Deportivo Alavés in Liga F. New dates remain to be announced. LaLiga also confirmed an open memorial at Tenerife’s Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium on Saturday, November 7, starting at 6pm Canary Islands time, with coverage through league and federation channels.
