Johannes Spors explains Southampton's decision to retain Tonda Eckert while disciplinary uncertainty complicated the club's summer planning.

Southampton group technical director Johannes Spors has described how uncertainty over Tonda Eckert's future complicated preparations for the season following the club's Spygate scandal. In an interview reported by BBC Sport on Friday, Spors said Southampton chose to support their head coach despite the unresolved disciplinary process.

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, Spors said owner Dragan Solak and colleagues were united behind that decision. The investigation left him planning a squad without knowing whether Eckert would receive a sanction that prevented him from working. Spors said he remained satisfied that Southampton had backed the coach.

The Football Association announced on October 7 that Eckert had admitted three breaches of Rule E3.1. They concerned directing or authorising observation of Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough training before fixtures in December 2025, April 2026 and May 2026 respectively. An independent commission imposed a £28,000 fine, a reprimand and a six-week suspension from football activity, suspended until the end of the 2027/28 season. The charges covered misconduct between December 2025 and May 2026. The FA also published the commission's written reasons alongside its announcement of the penalties.

That suspension is conditional, rather than an immediate ban. The FA said it would take effect if Eckert were found to have breached rules by requesting, authorising, taking or using information obtained from observing another club's training. Separately, the EFL's May proceedings resulted in Southampton's expulsion from the Championship play-offs and a four-point deduction for 2026/27. Middlesbrough were reinstated for the final, and Southampton's appeal against the sanction was dismissed on May 20, the EFL confirmed.

Spors also described providing personal support during the summer. He said his relationship with Eckert stretched back nearly a decade, including work in Italy and at Red Bull. Their close contact included both encouragement and private discussions in which they challenged each other.

Southampton were eighth after 11 Championship matches at the time of the BBC report. Their home record was the division's strongest: five wins and a draw, with no league defeats at St Mary's.
