Spors explains Southampton backing for Eckert during Spygate uncertainty
Southampton group technical director Johannes Spors has described how the Spygate investigation complicated preparations for the new season, while defending the club’s decision to retain head coach Tonda Eckert. In an interview reported by BBC Sport on October 23, Spors said planning the squad while the manager’s disciplinary outcome remained unresolved had presented an unusual challenge.

Spors told BBC Radio Solent that owner Dragan Solak and others at the club supported the same approach. He said his backing extended beyond football matters, including helping Eckert through the personal pressures of the summer and ensuring other specialists were available to support him. Spors said he remained pleased with the decision to keep the coach.
The Football Association announced Eckert’s punishment on October 7, following his admission of three breaches of Rule E3.1. An independent Regulatory Commission imposed a £28,000 fine, a reprimand and a six-week suspension from football and football-related activity. Crucially, that suspension was itself suspended until the end of the 2027/28 season, rather than requiring Eckert to step away immediately from his role at Southampton.
According to the FA, the misconduct concerned directing or authorising observation of training sessions at Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough. Those incidents preceded matches against Southampton in December 2025, April 2026 and May 2026 respectively. The suspended punishment would be activated by a further qualifying rules breach involving requesting, authorising, obtaining or using information from observation of another club’s training.
The individual sanction followed separate consequences for Southampton. Sky Sports reported that the club had been removed from the Championship play-off final and deducted four points for this season after admitting three breaches of EFL regulations. The club subsequently welcomed the FA outcome and said measures had been introduced to prevent a repeat.
BBC Sport reported that Southampton were eighth after 11 Championship matches, with five wins and a draw from six home games. Spors, who has known Eckert for nearly a decade, said their working relationship includes frequent conversations and private disagreements as well as support.
