Newcastle took the lead after five minutes. William Osula drove forward after Ryan Gravenberch lost possession near the Newcastle penalty area, then released Anthony Elanga down the right. Elanga took a touch before sending his finish beyond Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson. The early goal rewarded Newcastle's aggressive start and placed immediate pressure on the visitors.
Liverpool struggled to establish control during the first half despite moments of influence from Florian Wirtz. Alexander Isak, returning to face his former club, did not register a shot before the interval. Newcastle's young midfield pairing of Sean Steur and Lewis Miley helped protect a defense in which Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman played centrally, while Amar Dedic made his debut at right-back.
The visitors equalized early in the second half when Cody Gakpo struck first time from outside the penalty area. Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek could not keep out the shot after the home midfield allowed Gakpo space. Newcastle then changed its attack after Osula began limping, introducing Joe Willock and moving Yoane Wissa into the central forward role.
That adjustment quickly produced Newcastle's second goal. Wissa evaded several Liverpool players and supplied Willock, who curled his finish past Alisson and in off the inside of a post. Liverpool later introduced Alexis Mac Allister and Victor Munoz, while Newcastle substitute Jacob Ramsey went close with a volley. Isak also had an opportunity but miscued his attempt.
Liverpool finally drew level deep into added time after Lewis Hall brought down Munoz inside the penalty area. Szoboszlai drove the resulting spot kick high into the net to secure a point. The result completed a dramatic league opener for both new head coaches after the clubs had also paid tribute before kickoff to Kevin Keegan, who played for Liverpool and both played for and managed Newcastle.
