Thompson winner lifts Chelsea past Arsenal in Stamford Bridge derby

The win gave Chelsea 10 points from their opening four fixtures and a third successive league victory. Arsenal remain on five points after an opening-day 1-0 victory over Brighton, a goalless draw with Crystal Palace and a 1-1 draw against Manchester United. Chelsea's official coverage noted that the visitors had gone 20 WSL matches without defeat before this meeting. That run ended as Chelsea extended their own unbeaten league sequence from 11 games to 12.

The result also reversed last season's league outcome at Stamford Bridge, where Arsenal won 2-0. Thompson had scored in the previous campaign's 1-1 league draw at the Emirates, before Alessia Russo equalised. This time, her goal was enough to decide the derby and increase Chelsea's advantage over Arsenal from two points to five.
