Thompson winner lifts Chelsea to third with 1-0 victory over Arsenal

Alyssa Thompson scored the only goal as Chelsea beat Arsenal 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, September 27, moving into third place in the Women's Super League. Thompson struck in the 39th minute after Chelsea disrupted Arsenal's attempt to build from a goal kick. Chelsea's official match report described Wieke Kaptein intercepting possession before Ellie Carpenter and Melvine Malard helped work the ball to Keira Walsh. Anneke Borbe saved Walsh's effort, but Thompson collected the rebound and finished from the left side of the six-yard area.

Arsenal had threatened first, with Kim Little and Mariona Caldentey both hitting the woodwork before Chelsea went ahead. After the interval, Hannah Hampton kept out Lisa Baum, while Malard missed an opportunity at the other end. Substitute Sjoeke Nusken also threatened for the hosts, only for Borbe to come out and halt her chance.

Chelsea protected their narrow advantage through the closing stages. Katie McCabe blocked Chloe Kelly's attempt, and Hampton and Sandy Baltimore dealt with a late Steph Catley corner. Five minutes of added time passed without an equaliser, leaving Thompson's first-half finish decisive despite opportunities for both sides after the break.

The result extended the contrasting runs the teams had brought into the derby. Chelsea's published form guide recorded an opening draw with Aston Villa followed by wins over Manchester United and Birmingham City. Arsenal had opened with victory over Brighton before drawing with Crystal Palace and Manchester United. Sunday's defeat therefore left the visitors without a win in three successive league matches.

Chelsea now have 10 points, level with Tottenham, who beat Aston Villa 4-0 earlier in the day, the Evening Standard reported. Victoria Pelova scored twice in that match. Chelsea's own report put them two points behind leaders Manchester City, with the derby victory keeping them close to the top of the table.
