Toddler Briefly Stops Minnesota United's 5-1 Win at San Jose

Minnesota United's 5-1 Major League Soccer victory over the San Jose Earthquakes was briefly interrupted when a toddler wandered onto the field late in the match at PayPal Park. The Guardian reported that the child entered the playing area with about a minute and a half remaining, prompting the referee to stop play.

The toddler moved across the field while players waited for the interruption to be resolved. A stadium official then picked up the child and carried the toddler back toward the sideline, where the child was handed to a woman. Play was able to resume after the short delay.

The unusual incident occurred with Minnesota already holding a decisive advantage in San Jose. Apple TV's match broadcast immediately drew attention to the unexpected pitch invasion, while a commentator identified the child's position near the edge of the 18-yard penalty area. No injury or further disruption was reported in connection with the incident.

Minnesota manager Cameron Knowles said after the game that crowd noise first alerted those on the field that something unusual was happening. According to The Guardian, Knowles joked about the child's age when discussing the prospect of a stadium ban. Minnesota United also acknowledged the moment on its official X account after completing the 5-1 win.

The report placed the interruption alongside two other occasions since 2021 in which a young child reached the field during a professional match. A baby entered the playing area during a June 2025 game between DC United and the Chicago Fire before security intervened. In 2021, a mother ran onto the field to retrieve her two-year-old son during an FC Cincinnati match against Orlando City.

PayPal Park's interruption also recalled another unconventional MLS stoppage. A raccoon entered the field during a May 2024 match between New York City FC and the Philadelphia Union and remained loose while several people tried to contain it. Saturday's incident was resolved much more quickly, leaving Minnesota and San Jose to complete the final moments of a match the visitors had already placed beyond doubt.
