Watch Highlights
Republic of Ireland striker Troy Parrott has left AZ Alkmaar for Real Betis on a five-year contract. The move follows a 16-goal Eredivisie season for the 24-year-old.

Real Betis have completed the signing of Republic of Ireland striker Troy Parrott from AZ Alkmaar on a five-year contract. BBC Sport reported that both clubs issued statements confirming the agreement on Thursday. The final transfer fee was not disclosed in that report, although the BBC had earlier said the clubs were in advanced talks over a deal valued at about €20 million (£17.1 million).

The 24-year-old began his senior career at Tottenham Hotspur and later built experience through several loan spells. He spent the 2023-24 campaign with Excelsior Rotterdam before joining AZ permanently from Tottenham in July 2024. His move to Seville now takes him from the Dutch Eredivisie to Spain's La Liga.

Parrott started last season with 10 goals in his first seven appearances for AZ. A knee ligament injury sustained at the end of August then kept him out until October, but he recovered to finish the Dutch league season with 16 goals in 28 matches. Those numbers provided the clearest club-level platform for the latest move in his career.

His international form also featured prominently during the season. Parrott scored both Republic of Ireland goals in a 2-0 victory over Portugal in November, then struck a hat-trick three days later in a 3-2 away win against Hungary. His third goal in Budapest arrived in the 96th minute, according to the BBC's account.

That treble made Parrott the first Republic of Ireland men's player to score an away hat-trick and the country's first player to register a competitive men's international treble since Robbie Keane in 2014. Parrott has won 37 senior caps after making his Republic of Ireland debut against New Zealand in November 2019.

Real Betis finished fifth in La Liga in 2025-26 and qualified for the Champions League. Parrott will therefore join a club preparing for domestic and European competition, while remaining part of Ireland's plans under Heimir Hallgrimsson. Ireland are due to face Kosovo, Austria and Israel in Nations League Group B3.
