Unadkat and Haines put Sussex 332 ahead against Hampshire

Sussex ended the second day against Hampshire with a 332-run lead after Jaydev Unadkat took five wickets and Tom Haines finished one short of a century. According to the ECB Reporters' Network report carried by BBC Sport, the visitors reached 216-5 in their second innings at the Utilita Bowl.

Unadkat's 5-32 helped dismiss Hampshire for 128 in reply to Sussex's 244. It was his 25th five-wicket haul in first-class cricket and second for Sussex in the County Championship. Hampshire resumed on 55-4 but could not build a substantial recovery; James Coles removed Ben Mayes and Andrew Neal before Unadkat finished the innings.

Haines was unbeaten on 99 at the close, having shared partnerships of 62 with Charlie Tear and 64 with Oli Carter. Neal took three wickets and Felix Organ two. A single from the day's final delivery left Haines waiting overnight for the chance to complete his hundred, with the match still unfinished.

The fixture is also the final match of Paul Farbrace's tenure as Sussex head coach. In its pre-match update, Sussex confirmed that the team would conclude its Championship campaign away from home, just as it had begun it at Grace Road. The club entered this closing round following a seven-wicket victory against Nottinghamshire.

That previous win featured a five-wicket contribution from Ari Karvelas and damaged Nottinghamshire's attempt to retain the title, Sussex reported. The club also welcomed Ollie Robinson back into its squad after his England Test commitments. He had taken 28 wickets at an average of 9.32 across four Tests against New Zealand and Pakistan during the summer. Dan Hughes returned to the squad after missing two red-ball games through injury.

Hampshire's relegation was already confirmed before this game. Sussex's club report noted that Hampshire had beaten them at Hove in June, but had not won another Championship match in the six games since. Their only other victory had come against Yorkshire in their second match of the season, leaving a difficult campaign to end against Sussex.
