Verstappen Contract Clause Opens Door to Summer Move as F1 Driver Market Heats Up
Four-time champion Max Verstappen holds a contract with Red Bull running through 2028, but performance clauses could make him a free agent before the season reaches its midpoint.

The Formula 1 driver market is humming with speculation, and at the center of it all stands Max Verstappen. The Dutchman is the keystone every team in the paddock is watching, not simply because he is widely regarded as the best driver on the grid, but because his contractual situation could reshape the entire championship landscape before the summer break.

Verstappen signed a deal with Red Bull that runs through 2028, but sources close to the team say the agreement contains performance clauses that could allow him to walk if he finds himself outside a specific championship position by a predetermined point in the season. Given Red Bull's current form, there is little to suggest the four-time champion will be locked into his seat anytime soon. A dramatic reversal in pace would be required for Verstappen to trigger those escape hatch provisions by the summer break.

Mercedes has been the most publicly aggressive suitor. Team principal Toto Wolff has spoken openly about his interest in Verstappen for the better part of two years. Yet the German manufacturer's own driver lineup presents a significant obstacle. Both George Russell and rising star Kimi Antonelli are understood to hold multi-year contracts that bind them to the team beyond this season. Wolff recently told Austrian outlet OE24 that the team had no reason to consider a lineup change, speaking with evident satisfaction about both drivers. While F1 contracts are rarely airtight, the messaging from Brackley suggests the Mercedes door is not currently open.

McLaren represents another intriguing possibility. Verstappens race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase is making the move to Woking, which could add an element of personal appeal. However, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are both contracted through at least the end of 2027, and McLaren CEO Zak Brown has repeatedly stated his belief that the team possesses the best driver pairing on the grid. Whether a driver of Verstappens caliber would fit comfortably into a structure built around two young teammates remains an open question.

At Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton arrived on a firm three-year deal at the start of 2025, with Charles Leclercs commitment extending equally long. The red cars lineup appears locked for the foreseeable future.

One veteran who could dramatically reshape the market is Fernando Alonso. The Aston Martin contract that brought him to the British team expires at seasons end, and the 44-year-old has hinted broadly that 2026 could be his final campaign. Speaking to BBC Sport at the end of 2024, Alonso said he would enter the year treating it as his last, then reassess as the season unfolded. Sources close to the two-time world champion suggest that mindset had not changed through the following year, even as Aston Martin struggled with Honda power unit difficulties. Whether Alonso wants to spend what may be his final Formula 1 chapter in an uncompetitive car, particularly now that he has Adrian Neweys expertise on the technical side, is one of the sports most compelling unanswered questions.

For now, the market holds its breath. With seven months until the seasons final flyaway races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, there is time for all parties to map their futures. But as things stand, Verstappen is the name on every teams lips, and his next move could echo across the entire grid.
