Waite's unbeaten 73 lifts Worcestershire to 329-run lead over Derbyshire

Matthew Waite finished unbeaten on 73 as Worcestershire recovered from a second-innings collapse to establish a 329-run advantage over Derbyshire at New Road on Friday. The hosts closed on 203-9 in their County Championship Division Two match, according to the ECB Reporters' Network report carried by BBC Sport, with Waite's resistance denying Derbyshire the chance to wrap up the innings.

Worcestershire had already secured a sizeable first-innings cushion, making 214 before dismissing Derbyshire for 88. Ben Allison took 5-22 and Tom Taylor 3-27, while Wayne Madsen scored 40 for the visitors. The Guardian's closing scoreboard confirmed Worcestershire's overall lead and that they still had one wicket remaining, leaving Derbyshire facing a chase of more than 300 whenever the innings ends.

That position looked less comfortable during a difficult passage for the home batting side. Abbas and Luis Reece struck in successive overs early in the day, and Abbas also trapped Jake Libby lbw for 13. Following a bad-light interruption and an early lunch, Nick Potts removed Dan Lategan and Rehaan Edvalath, both caught behind, as Derbyshire continued to make inroads.

Adam Hose and Brett D'Oliveira also fell, and Worcestershire slipped to 88-7. Waite then benefited from two dropped chances by Martin Andersson at second slip off Abbas. The bowler did claim Henry Cullen, caught behind, to finish with second-innings figures of 4-63. Added to his 5-63 in Worcestershire's first innings, that gave Abbas nine wickets in the match.

Waite and Taylor nevertheless added 51 for the ninth wicket, resisting an Abbas spell that ran for 20 consecutive overs across the tea interval. Their partnership ended when Yousaf bin Naeem ran out Taylor for 18. Waite received another reprieve on 48 when a catch at long leg did not count because Potts had overstepped for a no-ball.

Waite reached his half-century from 97 deliveries, his sixth score of at least 50 in Division Two this season. Ben Gibbon contributed 21 as the lower order continued to frustrate Derbyshire. Further deteriorating light stopped play with 30 overs still scheduled, leaving Waite unbeaten and Worcestershire's final pair available to extend the lead when play resumes.
