Warwickshire Bowl Out Glamorgan for 69 as County Title Race Tightens

Warwickshire took the strongest opening-day position among the County Championship’s Division One title contenders by bowling Glamorgan out for 69 at Sophia Gardens, then reaching 154-3. The Guardian reported that Somerset and Nottinghamshire also made productive starts on Tuesday as the competition entered its final three rounds.

Ethan Bamber led Warwickshire’s attack with figures of 5-28 and passed 50 Championship wickets for the season. Ed Barnard added 3-5 as only Colin Ingram, who made 19, reached double figures for Glamorgan. Warwickshire then established an 85-run first-innings lead with seven wickets still available at the close.

Nottinghamshire recovered from 20-3 to make 377 against Hampshire at Trent Bridge. Joe Clarke drove the turnaround with his fourth Championship century of the season, while Liam Patterson-White contributed 92. Hampshire ended the day on 12-0 after Felix Organ and Nick Gubbins negotiated four overs from Olly Stone and Dillon Pennington.

Somerset closed on 354-9 at Grace Road after Leicestershire won the toss and chose to field. Openers Tom Lammonby and Josh Thomas put on 173 before Lammonby was caught on the boundary for 74. Thomas made exactly 100, his third century of the season, before being bowled.

The round began with Somerset leading Division One on 167 points, four ahead of Nottinghamshire and five ahead of Warwickshire. The Guardian’s live report said all three leading contenders benefited from their first day, with Warwickshire producing the most emphatic performance. Leicestershire entered the match ninth on 113 points and facing a separate charge over an alleged breach of ECB pitch regulations during their August match against Glamorgan. That matter has been referred to the independent Cricket Discipline Panel.

Elsewhere in Division One, Yorkshire reached 241-6 against Essex at Headingley, while rain prevented any play between Sussex and Surrey at Hove. In Division Two, Derbyshire were dismissed for 300 before Kent closed on 11-1; Durham made 252 and Middlesex replied with 70-2; Gloucestershire reached 164-6 against Lancashire; and Worcestershire made 200 before Northamptonshire closed on 16-0.
