West Brom Face Potential Retroactive Relegation as Financial Misconduct Case Reaches Critical Stage
West Brom could be stripped of their Championship status after the season ends as the EFL pursues profit and sustainability charges against the club, with relegation looming as a potential punishment.

West Bromwich Albion find themselves in the crosshairs of English football's financial regulators as the English Football League prepares to rule on charges that could retroactively relegate the club from the Championship to League One.

The club stands accused of breaching the EFL's profit and sustainability rules, specifically the 39 million pound loss limit across the three-year period ending with the 2024-25 season. The charges relate to how the club's financial reporting unit treated interest payments on loans secured during the extended sale process that concluded with Shilen Patel's takeover from previous owner Guochuan Lai.

The timing creates a legal gray area that has become the heart of the dispute. The Championship season concludes on May 2, leaving the EFL in a race against the clock. While sanctioning guidelines require punishments for P&S breaches to be applied in the campaign following the violation, the rulebook offers no definitive cutoff for when that campaign officially ends. Could it be the final league fixture? The Championship playoff final on May 23? Or even the publication of next season's fixtures on June 25?

The precedent from Derby County's similar situation looms large. In 2021, Derby were fined 100,000 pounds for financial irregularities the night before the following season's fixtures were published, with the EFL reserving the right to appeal for a heavier sanction. Derby ultimately avoided relegation that year but were hit with a 21-point deduction the following season for further P&S breaches and entering administration, which sent them spiraling to League One.

West Brom currently sit two points above the relegation zone with four matches remaining, making any points penalty potentially catastrophic. Manager James Morrison faces the surreal prospect of fighting to survive in the league table only to discover that the season's outcome may be decided long after the final whistle.

The club maintains it has complied fully with P&S regulations despite recorded combined losses of 55.6 million pounds since 2022, a figure that does not account for permitted deductions related to infrastructure and community spending. West Brom are preparing to mount a vigorous defense, and any adverse ruling will almost certainly trigger an appeal with significant legal consequences.

The Everton case provides additional context. The Toffees were docked 10 points three years ago for similar P&S breaches centered on stadium interest payments, reduced to six on appeal. West Brom's situation shares that DNA, suggesting the outcome could shape precedent well beyond the Hawthorns.

For now, Albion fans wait as the EFL works to resolve a case that could rewrite the season's final standings long after the champagne has been stored away.
