Wharton Holds Yorkshire Together on Rain-Shortened Scarborough Opener

James Wharton’s unbeaten 70 held Yorkshire’s innings together as rain and bad light cut short the opening day of their County Championship Division One match against Leicestershire at Scarborough. BBC Sport, carrying a report from the ECB Reporters’ Network, said Yorkshire closed on 144-5 after only 52.5 overs were possible.

Leicestershire’s stand-in captain Ian Holland chose to bowl after winning the toss, and Josh Davey quickly justified the decision. Davey had Adam Lyth caught behind after squaring him up, then bowled Will Luxton with a delivery angled into the right-hander. Yorkshire had lost both openers inside the first four overs.

Wharton and Sam Whiteman rebuilt the innings with a 115-run third-wicket partnership spanning the lunch interval. Wharton reached his half-century from 79 balls and ended the day 70 not out from 129 deliveries. Whiteman made 49, while the pair took Yorkshire from early trouble to 121-2 before Leicestershire broke through again.

The match carries weight at both ends of a tightly packed Division One table. Yorkshire began the round joint fifth with Sussex, 27 points behind leaders Nottinghamshire but only 17 ahead of second-bottom Leicestershire. The uncertain standings left Yorkshire with possible movement toward either the title race or the relegation places depending on the result.

Leicestershire regained control in overcast conditions that offered movement and extra bounce. Tom Scriven removed Whiteman, caught by wicketkeeper Jonny Tattersall, before Alex Green had Matthew Revis caught behind down the leg side. Josh Hull then dismissed Jonny Bairstow for Tattersall’s fourth catch of the day, leaving Yorkshire 144-5. Davey finished the day with figures of 2-22.

Only one more delivery was bowled after Bairstow’s dismissal before bad light forced the players off. Rain followed, and play was abandoned at 4:45 p.m. Wharton remained at the crease, giving Yorkshire a settled batter around whom to build when the match resumes, while Leicestershire ended a shortened day with the chance to press for the remaining first-innings wickets.
