Worcestershire gain early advantage after Kent collapse at Canterbury

Worcestershire finished the opening day in the stronger position against Kent after dismissing the hosts for 238 at St Lawrence Ground and reaching 80-2 in reply. The visitors closed 158 runs behind after 20.5 overs in their County Championship Division Two fixture on Wednesday, September 2.

BBC Sport, in a report supplied by the ECB Reporters’ Network, said fourth-placed Worcestershire won the toss and chose to bowl against second-placed Kent under overcast skies. Ben Allison provided the first breakthrough in the fourth over when Zak Crawley edged to Adam Hose at second slip. Hose initially dropped the chance but recovered to take the catch before the ball reached the ground.

Kent rebuilt through captain Daniel Bell-Drummond, who top-scored with 52, while Sam Northeast made 43 and Chris Benjamin contributed 40. The innings then deteriorated sharply in the evening session, with the final five wickets falling for 25 runs. Opening bowler Tom Taylor led Worcestershire’s figures with 3-55. Allison, Matthew Waite and Adam Finch each claimed two wickets, while wicketkeeper Henry Cullen completed five catches.

Worcestershire’s reply encountered an early setback when Bangladesh seamer Hasan Mahmud took wickets with consecutive deliveries. Those strikes reduced the visitors to 26-2 and gave Kent an opportunity to press home the advantage before bad light brought an early finish.

Dan Lategan and Hose instead stabilized the innings with an unbeaten 54-run partnership. Lategan ended the day on 35 not out from 71 balls, with Hose unbeaten on 24 from 38. Their stand carried Worcestershire to 80-2 and ensured no further wickets fell before stumps.

Worcestershire collected three points from the first day while Kent remained without a point from the match. The opening-day position leaves the visitors with eight wickets in hand as they seek to reduce the remaining deficit, while Kent will need early breakthroughs when play resumes to prevent Worcestershire from converting their advantage into a first-innings lead.
