Northern Ireland's Allen looked set to reach the final when he faced a straightforward black in the deciding frame that would have secured victory. However, he missed the relatively simple pot, allowing Wu to clear the colours and snatch a remarkable win.
The defeat was a devastating blow for Allen, who had been bidding to reach his second consecutive World Championship final. Wu's composed finish under pressure secured his place in the title match at the Crucible Theatre.
Wu will now face either Mark Davis or Si Jiahui in the final. Davis currently leads Si 6-2 in their semi-final after the opening session of their best-of-33 frames encounter. Wu will be hoping to maintain his momentum when he takes to the table for the final, which is scheduled to begin later this week.
