Wycombe Sack Michael Duff After Winless League One Start

Wycombe Wanderers have sacked manager Michael Duff after a winless opening to the 2026-27 League One season. BBC Sport reported that first-team coach Alex Morris has also left the Buckinghamshire club, which has taken three points from a possible 15 across its first five league matches.

The club said its decision followed a disappointing sequence stretching back to the spring and that it believed the time had come to take a new direction. Wycombe also said an interim head coach would be appointed later on Tuesday, but did not identify that person or announce a timetable for naming a permanent replacement.

Duff's side had lost only two of its five league games this season, drawing the other three, but the broader run proved decisive. According to BBC Sport, Wycombe have recorded just one victory in their past 13 matches in all competitions. That win came against Rotherham United on the final day of last season.

The current campaign has also brought a Carabao Cup defeat by Stevenage and a draw with Reading in the Vertu Trophy. Combined with the league results, those outcomes left Wycombe without a competitive victory this season and made Duff the first manager to lose his job during the campaign across England's top four divisions, BBC Sport reported.

Duff, 48, had been in charge for just under a year. He replaced Michael Dodds on September 18, 2025, after Wycombe had also made a difficult start to that season. The team recovered under Duff and eventually finished in the top half of League One, although its form weakened late in the campaign.

Before joining Wycombe, Duff had managed Cheltenham Town, Barnsley, Swansea City and Huddersfield Town. Morris, a former Crewe Alexandra manager, arrived at Wycombe in October 2025 after two years on Stoke City's coaching staff. Their departures leave the club beginning a coaching transition five league games into the season, with the interim appointment the only next step confirmed by Wycombe so far.
