Xavi Outlines Attacking Blueprint as Netherlands Head Coach

Xavi Hernández has set out an attacking, possession-led vision for the Netherlands after being presented as the national team’s head coach. The Guardian reported that the 46-year-old described the role as an opportunity to enter the “university of football,” reflecting the longstanding Dutch influence on his career at Barcelona. The Dutch federation, the KNVB, announced his appointment on August 12.

At his presentation on Tuesday, Xavi said he wants the Netherlands to take the initiative with the ball while playing with passion, desire and ambition. His approach is closely connected to the ideas associated with Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff, which shaped Barcelona’s academy and later influenced the teams in which Xavi played.

The new coach indicated that his preferred structures could include 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-3. He rejected the suggestion that a five-defender setup would be his main idea, saying he wants systems that give his side a better chance to control matches. That tactical direction places attacking football at the center of his early plans.

Xavi has already spoken with midfielder Frenkie de Jong, whom he coached at Barcelona, and Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk. He said he planned another conversation with Van Dijk to discuss the defender’s ambitions for the national side. Selection will not be restricted by league: Xavi said he will judge players on their performances, including those competing in the Saudi Pro League.

The Guardian also detailed the KNVB’s appointment process. Dutch elite football director Nigel de Jong first approached Pep Guardiola, who did not want to take a job in the near future, and later held two meetings with Arne Slot, who chose to remain in club management. Xavi then met De Jong and supervisory board member Clarence Seedorf in Amsterdam, while Netherlands under-21 coach Michael Reiziger was also considered.

Xavi’s first assignment is scheduled for September 24, when the Netherlands host Germany in Amsterdam in the Nations League. Germany will also have a new coach in Jürgen Klopp. Xavi said he is excited by the opening test and described Germany as one of Europe’s best teams, making the fixture an immediate measure of how quickly his ideas take hold.
