Zak Crawley Leads Unbroken Kent Stand Against Northamptonshire

Zak Crawley made an unbeaten 82 as Kent reached 154 without loss against Northamptonshire on the rain-affected opening day of their County Championship Division Two match at Wantage Road. The ECB Reporters' Network said Crawley and Ben Compton shared an unbroken opening stand after the visitors were asked to bat.

Only 36 overs were possible following torrential morning rain, with play beginning at 4:15pm. Crawley struck 12 fours and one six to record his highest Championship score of the season, while Compton closed on 51 not out. Northamptonshire had not begun their first innings by stumps.

The match began with Kent second in Division Two and Northamptonshire third, separated by four points in a tight promotion contest. Kent's opening pair ensured the delayed start did not prevent their side from taking early control, although the scoreboard did not fully reflect the difficult spells they negotiated.

Ben Sanderson found movement from the David Capel End and repeatedly tested Crawley. The opener survived a strong leg-before appeal on 16 and was also beaten outside off stump, while Compton was dropped on 17 when Nathan McSweeney could not hold a low chance at fourth slip off Sanderson.

Crawley reached his half-century from 74 balls by nudging Yuzvendra Chahal into the off side. He later advanced to hit the leg-spinner for six into the upper tier of the Spencer Pavilion and struck Sanderson for three cover boundaries during the bowler's second spell. His innings continued the form that had produced a half-century against Middlesex the previous week.

Compton adopted the more measured approach and brought up his fifty from 108 deliveries in the final over. Calvin Harrison twice appealed strongly for leg before during that over, but Compton remained at the crease. The pair's 154-run partnership left Kent with all 10 first-innings wickets intact when the shortened day's play ended.
