Zverev beats Shang in Beijing to set up Djokovic quarter-final
Alexander Zverev defeated China's Juncheng Shang 6-0 6-3 at the China Open to reach the quarter-finals and secure a meeting with Novak Djokovic. BBC Sport reported that the men's top seed advanced in straight sets in Beijing on Saturday, continuing a season in which he has won his first two Grand Slam titles.

The German took the opening set without dropping a game before completing the victory in a second set in which Shang won three games. The result keeps Zverev in contention for the Beijing title and preserves his opportunity to reach the top of the men's world rankings for the first time in his career.
According to the BBC, Zverev will become world number one if he wins both the China Open and the Shanghai Masters. The latter tournament begins on Wednesday, 7 October. Those two titles remain conditions of that ranking scenario: Saturday's victory secured a quarter-final place, rather than guaranteeing a change at the top of the standings.
Djokovic, whom Zverev will face on Sunday, has won the China Open six times and has never been beaten at the Beijing event, the BBC reported. The 39-year-old is the next opponent for a player whose breakthrough major victories this season came at the French Open and US Open. Zverev is 29 and has yet to hold the number one ranking.
The race for that position also changed on Saturday when current leader Jannik Sinner withdrew from the Shanghai Masters. Sinner is recovering from a knee injury and has not competed since defeating Zverev in July's Wimbledon final. The Italian took the top ranking from Carlos Alcaraz in April; his withdrawal removes him from the Shanghai field but does not itself put Zverev first.
Alcaraz, now ranked third, also progressed on Saturday at the Japan Open in Tokyo. He saved four set points in the opening set against Matteo Arnaldi before winning 7-6 (8-6) 6-1. His quarter-final opponent will be Denis Shapovalov, who beat Alejandro Tabilo 7-5 3-6 6-4. Alcaraz returned at September's US Open after four months out with a wrist injury.
