Ulberg Wins Light-Heavyweight Title in Shocking First-Round Finish at UFC 327
New Zealander Carlos Ulberg claimed the vacant light-heavyweight crown in dramatic fashion, stopping Jiri Prochazka in the first round despite suffering a serious knee injury.

Carlos Ulberg accomplished what many thought impossible Sunday night at UFC 327 in Miami, capturing the vacant light-heavyweight title in spectacular and improbable fashion.

The New Zealander fell to the canvas early in the first round after an awkward landing buckled his right knee. As he struggled to put weight on the injured leg, Jiri Prochazka stalked forward, sensing an opportunity to finish a wounded opponent.

But what happened next stunned everyone in the arena.

With Prochazka closing in, Ulberg found exactly what he needed. A perfectly placed left hook connected flush with the Czech star’s chin, sending him crashing to the mat. Ulberg immediately pounced, raining down punches until the referee stepped in to stop the contest.

Ulberg’s victory came at a significant cost. Following the fight, UFC president Dana White suggested the injury could be an anterior cruciate ligament tear, which would typically require more than nine months of recovery after surgery.

Despite the uncertainty over his knee, Ulberg was already focused on what lies ahead. “I blew out my knee, but I knew all I needed was that one shot and I ended up getting it,” he said. “Now I’ve gotta sort this knee out.”

The victory extended Ulberg’s remarkable winning streak to 10 straight UFC fights. He earned this title shot by defeating former title challenger Dominick Reyes in September.

Prochazka, who entered the fight as the favorite, expressed confusion over his defeat. The former champion revealed he had dropped his guard after feeling sympathy for Ulberg’s injury. “I felt mercy. I felt sorry for him in that fight,” Prochazka admitted. “This is one of the biggest lessons in my life.”

Commentator Daniel Cormier offered a stark assessment: “If he went to his corner, this fight would have been done. His knee is blown out, he can’t even stand.”

Former President Donald Trump was in attendance for the bout, watching from octagon-side as the historic upset unfolded. The UFC has scheduled a White House event for June 14 to celebrate 250 years of American independence.

The title was vacated when Alex Pereira moved up to heavyweight. With this victory, Ulberg establishes himself as the new benchmark in the division, albeit with an uncertain road ahead due to his knee.
