Tiger Woods Confirms Return for Masters Tournament After Six-Month Recovery from Back Surgery
The 15-time major champion announces he will compete at Augusta National next month following successful rehabilitation from his latest procedure.

Tiger Woods officially confirmed his return to competitive golf Thursday morning, announcing that he will compete in the 2026 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club next month. The 15-time major champion has been absent from tour competition for six months following back surgery in September, but stated during a press conference at his Jupiter, Florida home that he feels physically ready to chase his sixth green jacket.

Woods, who turns 51 in December, underwent a microdiscectomy procedure to address recurring issues with his lower back that had limited his mobility and caused significant pain during the 2025 season. The surgery was performed by Dr. Richard Guyer at the Texas Back Institute, marking the sixth back procedure of Woods' career but the first since his spinal fusion surgery in 2017.

"I feel better than I have in years," Woods said while demonstrating his improved range of motion to assembled media. "The surgery was a complete success, and my rehabilitation has gone exactly as planned. I've been hitting balls pain-free for the past month, and my doctors have cleared me for competitive play. Augusta National holds special meaning for me, and I couldn't imagine missing the Masters if I'm physically capable of competing."

The announcement comes just three weeks before the Masters begins on April 10, giving Woods limited time to prepare for his return to competitive golf. However, the 82-time PGA Tour winner emphasized that he has been practicing extensively at his private facility in South Florida and feels confident in his current form and fitness level.

Woods has a remarkable history of success at Augusta National, having won the Masters in 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005, and most memorably in 2019 following his comeback from personal and physical struggles. His victory seven years ago marked one of the greatest comebacks in sports history and demonstrated his ability to compete at the highest level despite physical limitations.

The golf world has eagerly awaited news of Woods' return, as his presence at major championships continues to generate massive television ratings and fan interest. Augusta National officials confirmed that Woods has committed to the tournament and will participate in the traditional Champions Dinner on April 8, where past Masters winners gather annually.

While Woods acknowledged that he may not be able to maintain a full tournament schedule moving forward, he expressed optimism about competing in select events throughout 2026, particularly the major championships. "My goal is to be strategic about when and where I play," Woods explained. "The Masters was always going to be my priority for a return, and I'm excited to get back to competing at the highest level once again."
