Jackson Shelstad Commits to Louisville Cardinals, Reuniting with Pat Kelsey
Former Oregon point guard Jackson Shelstad has chosen to continue his collegiate career at Louisville under new head coach Pat Kelsey, joining the Cardinals through the transfer portal.

Pat Kelsey continues reshaping the Louisville basketball program, this time landing a standout point guard from the Pacific Northwest.

Jackson Shelstad, who spent three seasons at Oregon, committed to the Cardinals via the NCAA transfer portal on Sunday, announcing his decision with an Instagram post. The 6-foot-1 West Linn, Oregon native visited Louisville’s campus this past weekend alongside former Kansas big man Flory Bidunga, who also pledged to join Kelsey’s roster.

Shelstad’s journey to Louisville included significant obstacles. He appeared in just 12 games during the first portion of his junior season before a hand injury derailed his campaign. The damage occurred during practice roughly a month before the season began, and he re-injured the hand in late December. Further examination revealed ligament damage, prompting Oregon coach Dana Altman to shut him down for the remainder of the year.

Despite playing only 12 games, Shelstad displayed the form that earned him third-team All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore. In those starts, averaging 34.8 minutes per game, he posted career-best numbers of 15.6 points on 39.1% shooting, along with 4.9 assists against just 1.8 turnovers per contest. He also chipped in 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals.

The numbers behind his play were equally impressive. His 31.7% assist rate ranked ninth in the Big Ten last season, while his 12.6% turnover rate was the third lowest among the conference’s top facilitators. As a sophomore across 35 starts, he averaged 13.7 points on 45.1% shooting and distributed 2.7 assists with minimal mistakes.

Altman expressed hope that Shelstad would receive a medical redshirt season, though his 12 appearances complicated that effort. The Ducks coach noted at the time: “He’s a couple games over, but definitely: we’ll try to get him another year.”

Shelstad and Bidunga arrive at Louisville as the program rebuilds under Kelsey. Prior to their commitments, only two scholarship players remained on the roster who hadn’t either exhausted their eligibility, declared for the NBA draft, or entered the transfer portal: London Johnson and Adrian Wooley.

The transfer portal window closes at midnight on Wednesday, April 22, with college basketball’s regular signing period beginning the same day.
