Max Verstappen Dominates Bahrain Grand Prix Practice Sessions as Red Bull Shows Early Season Pace
The three-time world champion topped all three practice sessions ahead of Sunday's season opener, with Red Bull looking ominously fast once again.

Max Verstappen sent an ominous message to his Formula 1 rivals by dominating all three practice sessions at the Bahrain Grand Prix, as Red Bull Racing once again appears to have built the car to beat heading into the 2026 season opener this Sunday.

The three-time world champion was untouchable around the Bahrain International Circuit, posting a fastest lap of 1:29.123 in FP3 that was nearly four-tenths of a second faster than his closest competitor. Verstappen's pace was particularly impressive in race simulation runs, where the RB20 showed excellent tire degradation characteristics that could prove decisive in Sunday's race strategy battles.

"The car feels really good out there," Verstappen said after the final practice session. "We've worked hard over the winter to improve in certain areas, and it seems like those changes are paying off. But it's still early days - qualifying and race day are what really matter. We know the competition will be closer when it counts."

Ferrari provided the biggest challenge to Red Bull's early dominance, with Charles Leclerc finishing second-fastest in both FP2 and FP3. The Monégasque driver was encouraged by his car's balance but acknowledged that Red Bull appears to have maintained their significant advantage from last season. Carlos Sainz completed a strong day for the Scuderia by finishing third in the final session.

Mercedes struggled more than expected in the desert heat, with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finishing fifth and seventh respectively in FP3. The Silver Arrows appeared to be suffering from porpoising issues that plagued them in previous seasons, though team principal Toto Wolff insisted they have solutions ready for qualifying and race trim.

The most surprising development of the day came from Aston Martin, where Fernando Alonso managed fourth-fastest in the final session while new teammate Felipe Drugovich impressed in his F1 debut by finishing eighth. The Spanish veteran looked comfortable in the updated AMR26 and suggested the team has made significant strides since their disappointing 2025 campaign.

With temperatures expected to rise even further for Saturday's qualifying session, tire management and cooling will become crucial factors. Verstappen's effortless pace in all conditions suggests Red Bull has once again built a championship-caliber car, setting up what could be another dominant campaign for the Dutch superstar as he chases a fourth consecutive world title.
