Kyle Larson Wins Thrilling Las Vegas 400 After Late-Race Battle with Chase Elliott
Larson held off a charging Elliott in the final 20 laps to capture his first victory of the 2026 NASCAR season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Kyle Larson captured his first victory of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season in dramatic fashion on Friday night, holding off a furious late charge from Chase Elliott to win the Las Vegas 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in a thrilling finish that had the capacity crowd on their feet.

The Hendrick Motorsports driver started from the pole position but had to overcome multiple challenges throughout the 267-lap race, including an early speeding penalty on pit road that dropped him to the back of the field. Larson methodically worked his way back through the pack, showcasing the speed and racecraft that made him the 2021 Cup Series champion.

The decisive moment came with 20 laps remaining when Larson inherited the lead during a caution period for debris on the track. Elliott, who had been running second, chose a different pit strategy that gave him fresher tires but positioned him behind Larson for the final restart. What followed was an epic battle between two of NASCAR's elite drivers that showcased the best of stock car racing.

"This feels incredible," Larson said in Victory Lane while holding his young son. "We had to overcome a lot tonight, but this team never gave up. When Chase got behind me with those fresh tires, I knew it was going to be a dogfight. He raced me clean and hard, which is what you expect from a champion like him."

Elliott mounted a furious charge in the closing laps, pulling alongside Larson multiple times through turns three and four, but the veteran driver used every inch of the track to maintain his advantage. The two cars crossed the finish line separated by just 0.087 seconds in one of the closest finishes in Las Vegas Motor Speedway history, with Elliott graciously acknowledging Larson's defensive driving in post-race interviews.

The victory marks Larson's 19th career Cup Series win and gives Hendrick Motorsports their second victory of the young season. It also represents a strong bounce-back performance for the No. 5 team after a disappointing finish at the season-opening Daytona 500, where mechanical issues relegated them to a 28th-place finish.

Ryan Blaney finished third, followed by Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin to round out the top five. The race featured 12 different leaders and 23 lead changes, with multiple multi-car incidents throughout the evening that tested teams' pit strategies and drivers' patience. The NASCAR Cup Series continues next weekend with the Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway as the sport heads into the heart of its West Coast swing.
