Cristiano Ronaldo leaves Portugal camp and postpones explanation

Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen, announcing his decision on Wednesday before the national team’s Nations League match against Denmark. Ronaldo said the decision followed coach Jorge Jesus’s news conference and a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation. According to Diário de Notícias, he promised to explain his reasons to the Portuguese public at a later point. His message also wished Portugal and all his teammates luck in their forthcoming matches.

The announcement came after Jesus had publicly denied a dispute involving the forward. BBC Sport reported that the coach rejected suggestions Ronaldo had refused to train, explaining that he had instead been doing individual mobility and strengthening exercises. Jesus had expected him to join Wednesday’s team session, but Ronaldo did not take the field with the squad in Denmark.

RTP Madeira’s account of the news conference added detail about the training arrangements. Jesus said Ronaldo’s absence from team training on the first two days after a match was part of an agreed routine. The coach, who said he had worked with the player for a year, maintained that Ronaldo had not refused anything and denied there was a disciplinary controversy.

The selection issue followed Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on Sunday, when Ronaldo remained an unused substitute. BBC Sport reported that Jesus had told him beforehand that he would not start but might be introduced later. The coach ultimately decided against using him. Goncalo Ramos scored the winner and remained Jesus’s intended starting choice against Denmark.

Jesus also stressed the demands facing the whole squad. According to RTP Madeira, he said Portugal’s schedule of four matches in 11 days required changes, noting that he had made three or four alterations in each game. He argued that the focus of the Copenhagen news conference should be Denmark and Portugal’s Nations League ambitions, rather than a single player.

Ronaldo’s statement confirms his departure from this camp, but leaves his explanation outstanding. Jesus’s earlier denial of a dispute and the captain’s subsequent decision are both on record; neither establishes the reasons Ronaldo has said he will disclose later.
