Rangers and Hearts exits end Scotland's Women's Europa Cup challenge

Rangers and Heart of Midlothian were eliminated from the Women's Europa Cup on Wednesday, ending Scotland's involvement in the competition. BBC Sport reported that Hammarby won 3-0 at Broadwood Stadium to advance 5-0 on aggregate, while Real Sociedad beat Hearts 4-0 in San Sebastian after a goalless first leg.

Hammarby, finalists last season and second in the Swedish top flight, extended their advantage over Rangers after 13 minutes. Mathilde Janzen supplied a through ball for Anna Walter, who finished past Jenna Fife. Laura Berry had Rangers' first opportunity eight minutes later but sent her effort straight at goalkeeper Cajsa Andersson.

Ida Hermannsdottir and Elin Sorum both missed close-range chances before half-time. Rangers had possession without creating another threat until the 58th minute, when Berry again shot at Andersson. Hermannsdottir then scored two minutes later, meeting a through ball to put the visitors further ahead.

Sixteen-year-old Fanny Peterson completed the scoring after Fife parried Svea Rehnberg's attempt. Peterson had also scored in the first leg. The result eliminated the Scottish Women's Premier League leaders and sent last season's Swedish league runners-up through without conceding across the two matches.

Earlier, Scottish champions Hearts had arrived in San Sebastian with their second qualifying round tie still level following the previous week's stalemate in Edinburgh. According to BBC Sport's report, they struggled to threaten as Sociedad applied sustained pressure. Laura Camino opened the scoring in the 18th minute, heading Ainhoa Marin's cross inside the far post from 12 yards.

The home side took control before the interval with two further goals. Erin Rennie's foul on Intza Egiguren brought a penalty that Paula Fernandez converted five minutes before half-time. Four minutes later, Ainoa Campo finished Cecilia Marcos' low delivery from close range, leaving Hearts three goals behind at the break.

Torrential rain interrupted Sociedad's momentum in the second half. Lauren Wade registered Hearts' first effort on goal with a free-kick in the 55th minute, but it went straight to the goalkeeper. Marin added Sociedad's fourth in the 76th minute, completing a 4-0 aggregate victory before Rangers' subsequent defeat confirmed the end of the Scottish challenge.
