NFL Coaching Carousel Continues as Bears Hire Former Saints Coordinator
The Chicago Bears have reportedly reached an agreement with former New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. to become their new head coach.

The Chicago Bears have made their choice in the ongoing NFL coaching carousel, reaching an agreement in principle with former New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. to become their new head coach, according to multiple league sources. The hiring ends a weeks-long search process that saw the Bears interview eight candidates.

Carmichael, 54, brings nearly two decades of NFL coaching experience to Chicago, including 15 seasons with the Saints organization. He served as the Saints' offensive coordinator from 2009 to 2025, helping guide the team's high-powered offense during their most successful era, including their Super Bowl championship following the 2009 season.

Bears General Manager Ryan Poles praised Carmichael's offensive acumen and leadership qualities in a statement released Tuesday evening. "Pete brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of developing quarterbacks and maximizing offensive potential," Poles said. "His vision aligns perfectly with our goals for this franchise."

The hiring is expected to have immediate implications for the Bears' quarterback situation, with Carmichael known for his ability to work with young signal-callers. During his tenure in New Orleans, he helped develop Drew Brees into one of the most prolific passers in NFL history and more recently worked with Jameis Winston during his resurgent 2024 season.

Carmichael beat out several other notable candidates for the position, including former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Press Taylor. His appointment makes him the 17th head coach in Bears franchise history.

The Bears are expected to formally introduce Carmichael at a press conference later this week, where he will outline his vision for turning around a franchise that has struggled to find consistency in recent seasons.
