Atlético Madrid defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday, with Pablo Barrios scoring inside the opening minute and Ademola Lookman adding the second late on. According to the Guardian’s match report, United were still trailing by a single goal when Leny Yoro was sent off following a video review, before Lookman secured the home side’s victory.

Barrios needed just 53 seconds to put Atlético ahead at the Metropolitano. Lee Kang-in released Álex Baena into space on the left, and Baena carried the ball into the area before finding Barrios. His first-time shot struck Ayden Heaven on its way into the net. Barrios then held up six fingers in tribute to captain Koke, whose mother had died before the match.

United created opportunities to respond through Bryan Mbeumo, who sent one effort wide and had another blocked by Jan Oblak after combining with Youri Tielemans. Carlos Baleba also headed straight at the goalkeeper from a corner. Atlético nevertheless had 66% of possession before the interval, according to the report. Álex Grimaldo hit the crossbar with a free-kick, while Johnny Cardoso had a goal ruled out after a review identified a Marcos Llorente handball in the buildup.

The chances continued after the break. Julián Alvarez volleyed against the post from a Barrios pass, while Bruno Fernandes missed an opportunity to equalise at the other end. Tielemans found the United captain near the edge of the area, but Fernandes lifted his attempt narrowly wide with Oblak off his line. Baena subsequently curled a shot wide for Atlético.

Michael Carrick made three changes after 65 minutes, introducing Mason Mount, Amad Diallo and Joshua Zirkzee for Marcus Rashford, Tielemans and Baleba. United began moving the ball more quickly and Fernandes became more involved, later striking the crossbar following a short corner. The visitors remained within one goal as the match entered its closing stages.

Yoro’s dismissal then interrupted that push for an equaliser. Referee Glenn Nyberg initially allowed play to continue after Yoro and Jonathan David fell while chasing a pass from Morten Hjulmand, but showed the defender red after consulting the monitor. Atlético scored again a minute later: Grimaldo found David inside the area, Senne Lammens saved his shot and Lookman converted the rebound.
