Olly Stone's Six-Wicket Haul Puts Nottinghamshire in Control at Surrey
Olly Stone claimed 6-44 to put County Championship leaders Nottinghamshire in control against Surrey after the second day at the Kia Oval. BBC Sport, carrying a report from the ECB Reporters Network, said Surrey were dismissed for 162 before Nottinghamshire reached 147-3 at stumps, giving the visitors a lead of 169 runs with seven second-innings wickets remaining.

What happened was a sharp reversal after Nottinghamshire had struggled to 104-8 on the opening day. They recovered to make 184, with Liam Patterson-White's 76 proving crucial, then restricted Surrey to a first-innings total 22 runs short of their own. Surrey lost their final eight wickets for 87 as Stone led the attack.
Surrey had initially steadied after nightwatchman Matthew Fisher was trapped lbw by Brett Hutton. Rory Burns and Adam Thomas added 59, but Burns fell for 44 when he upper-cut Stone to deep backward point. Stone then removed Ollie Pope for a five-ball duck in the same over, shifting the momentum firmly toward Nottinghamshire.
Stone later bowled Thomas for Surrey's top score of 48 and had debutant Mahipal Lomror caught at slip from the next delivery, completing his five-wicket haul. Dillon Pennington removed Ben Foakes and Jordan Clark, Patterson-White dismissed substitute Josh Blake, and Stone returned to bowl Tom Lawes for 18 and secure his sixth wicket.
Surrey made early progress when Nottinghamshire began their second innings. Dan Worrall bowled captain Haseeb Hameed for four, while Fisher had Freddie McCann caught behind for 22. Worrall then removed Ben Slater for 37, but Joe Clarke and Jack Haynes saw out the final 20 overs and added an unbeaten 70. Clarke closed on 37 not out.
Why it matters is reflected in both the match position and the standings. Nottinghamshire entered the contest five points clear at the top and are trying to turn a narrow first-innings advantage into a decisive lead. Surrey still have a route back if they take early wickets on day three, but Stone's spell and Nottinghamshire's late partnership left the defending champions with the stronger position at stumps.
