Shakhtar Donetsk have agreed to play their Champions League home matches at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge this season, according to BBC Sport. The Ukrainian club's move to west London remains subject to final regulatory approval, although the report said UEFA and Hammersmith and Fulham Council have signed off on the arrangement.

The agreement would bring at least four league-phase fixtures to Stamford Bridge, with Shakhtar's opponents to be determined in the forthcoming competition draw. Chelsea will not participate in European competition this season after finishing 10th in the Premier League last term, leaving its stadium available for Shakhtar's midweek European schedule.

BBC Sport reported that the agreement is understood to be non-commercial. Chelsea said it would work closely with Shakhtar in the weeks ahead so that matchdays operate safely and smoothly for the Ukrainian team and its supporters. Shakhtar described playing at the stadium as a special opportunity and thanked Chelsea for making the venue available.

Shakhtar have been unable to use the Donbas Arena since the Russia-backed annexation of Donetsk in 2014. During that extended displacement, the club has staged domestic games in Kyiv and Lviv, while European home fixtures have been taken to Germany, Slovenia and Poland. The Stamford Bridge agreement represents another temporary home rather than a return to Donetsk.

Chelsea's roughly 40,000-capacity ground became Shakhtar's preferred option, BBC Sport reported. Fulham's Craven Cottage and Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium were also considered, but both have smaller capacities. Officials believe the prospect of elite European opponents, potentially including clubs from England, can attract crowds large enough to make use of Stamford Bridge.

The clubs have developed a relationship since Chelsea signed Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar in 2023, and they were also involved in the Game4Ukraine charity match. The plan is intended in part to connect with London's Ukrainian community. BBC Sport cited Office for National Statistics figures showing 32,000 Ukraine-born residents in the capital and about 100,000 people of Ukrainian heritage across the United Kingdom.
