Duke Blue Devils Secure No. 1 Seed in March Madness After Dramatic ACC Championship Victory Over North Carolina
The Blue Devils defeated their rivals 78-75 in overtime to claim the ACC Tournament title and lock up the top seed in the East Region.

Duke University secured their position as the No. 1 seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament on Friday evening at the Greensboro Coliseum, defeating arch-rival North Carolina 78-75 in a thrilling overtime battle that capped off one of the most memorable ACC Championship games in recent memory and provided the perfect springboard into March Madness.

The Blue Devils were led by freshman sensation Cooper Flagg, who scored 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a performance that demonstrated why many consider him the most talented player in college basketball. Flagg scored eight crucial points in overtime, including the game-winning three-pointer with 47 seconds remaining that sent the Duke faithful into celebration mode.

This is what college basketball is all about - playing your biggest rival for a championship with everything on the line, Flagg said during the trophy presentation ceremony. Coach Scheyer has prepared us all season for moments like this, and to come through when our team needed it most feels incredible. Now we have to take this momentum into the NCAA Tournament.

The victory gives Duke their first ACC Championship since 2022 and provides head coach Jon Scheyer with his first conference tournament title as the Blue Devils enter March Madness with tremendous confidence and the kind of veteran leadership that often translates to deep tournament runs. Senior guard Jeremy Roach added 19 points and 8 assists in what was a complete team effort.

North Carolina fought valiantly despite playing without injured star forward Harrison Ingram, who suffered an ankle injury in Thursday semifinal victory over Virginia. The Tar Heels were led by RJ Davis, who scored 31 points but could not prevent his team from falling just short of what would have been their second consecutive ACC Championship.

Duke head coach Jon Scheyer praised his team resilience and execution in the biggest moments of the contest. This group has been building toward this all season long, Scheyer said. To beat North Carolina in a championship game requires mental toughness and shot-making ability, and our guys showed both tonight. Cooper was spectacular, but this was really a total team victory.

As the No. 1 seed in the East Region, Duke will likely face a 16-seed in their opening round matchup when the NCAA Tournament begins next week. The Blue Devils combination of elite talent, experienced coaching, and championship-game experience makes them one of the clear favorites to reach the Final Four and potentially cut down the nets in Phoenix.

With Selection Sunday just two days away, Duke dramatic championship victory ensures they will enter March Madness with maximum confidence and the kind of momentum that has historically been crucial for teams making deep tournament runs.
