Rahm Surges into Contention with Stunning 63 at Honda Classic Moving Day
Jon Rahm delivered a masterclass in precision golf today, carding a flawless 9-under 63 in the third round of the Honda Classic to surge into serious contention at PGA National. The Spanish star's bogey-free performance, which included nine birdies and several spectacular iron shots, moved him to 12-under par for the tournament and within striking distance of leader Viktor Hovland heading into Sunday's final round.
Rahm's round began quietly with three consecutive pars before he caught fire on the difficult front nine. The former world No. 1 birdied four of the next six holes, including a spectacular approach shot to within three feet on the par-4 seventh hole that drew roars from the gallery. His iron play was particularly impressive throughout the round, as he hit 16 of 18 greens in regulation while consistently leaving himself makeable birdie opportunities.
The back nine proved even more spectacular for Rahm, who added five more birdies to his card without dropping a single shot. His highlight came at the par-5 18th, where he nearly holed his eagle attempt from 25 feet, settling for a tap-in birdie that capped off one of the finest rounds of his career. The performance was reminiscent of his dominant form from 2021-2022, when he was considered the world's best player.
"Everything felt dialed in today," Rahm said after signing his scorecard. "My iron play was really sharp, and I was able to be aggressive when I needed to be. This golf course demands precision, and when you're hitting it close consistently, you can make a lot of birdies. I'm excited about tomorrow - it's going to be a fun battle."
Rahm's charge sets up an intriguing final round showdown with Hovland, who maintains a slim one-shot lead at 13-under par after his own solid round of 68. The Norwegian has been in excellent form throughout the week, showing the kind of consistent ball-striking that made him one of the PGA Tour's most reliable performers in recent seasons.
Behind the leading duo, a group of talented players remain within striking distance, including Collin Morikawa (10-under), Xander Schauffele (9-under), and defending champion Sepp Straka (8-under). With PGA National's challenging layout and notoriously difficult closing stretch, Sunday's final round promises to be a stern test of nerve and skill. For Rahm, who hasn't won on the PGA Tour since early 2023, a victory would mark a significant return to form and potentially signal the beginning of another dominant stretch in his illustrious career.
